The Ultimate Words With Friends Guide

Master the modern mobile word game with strategic tile placement and social gameplay features

What is Words With Friends and How to Play?

Words With Friends is the wildly popular mobile word game created by Zynga that revolutionized social gaming. Similar to Scrabble but with its own unique board layout and features, players create interlocking words on a 15x15 grid while competing against friends or random opponents online. The game's asynchronous play lets you manage multiple games at once, taking turns whenever convenient.

Steps for Playing Words With Friends

Start a Match

Begin a new game with friends via username, Facebook, or random opponent matching. Each player starts with 7 tiles. Either player can make the first move, which must cross the center "PLUS" square.

Place Your Words

Create words horizontally or vertically, connecting to existing tiles on the board. Use the built-in dictionary checker to verify words before playing them.

Score and Swap

Points are calculated automatically including bonus squares. Draw new tiles to maintain 7 on your rack. The game ends when all tiles are used or both players pass consecutively.

Opening Move Advantage

Unlike Scrabble, either player can go first. The center square is a DW, making the opening move less powerful than Scrabble's guaranteed double word score.

Board Control Tactics

  • Control corners where TW squares are located
  • Create "hooks" near bonus squares
  • Use DW squares defensively when ahead

Tile Exchange Strategy

  • More liberal than Scrabble due to different board layout
  • Exchange when vowel-heavy (5+ vowels)

  • Save Swap+ for late game when options are limited
  • Use Word Radar when behind to find comeback plays
  • Hindsight helps learn optimal plays for improvement

  3. Not Using Chat Feature - Missing the social aspect that makes the game unique
  4. Hoarding Power-Ups - Saving them too long instead of using strategically
  5. Playing Too Fast - No time limit means you can think through moves carefully
